Here are a few, hopefully useful, vantage points to get you started if you’re in the process of putting together an up-to-date CV:
Think of the “recipient”. Without clarity about who you are targeting to read your CV and also clearly articulated career goals, there is no way to make a great CV. Yes, you will need to draft, or at least edit, your resume for the different positions and companies you are applying to, so that it properly serves the needs of the different readers (including applicant tracking systems, but more importantly people!) and your own goals. A well written CV should adequately answer the following four main questions:
• Who are you?
• Where have you been so far?
• What are you good at?
• What can you do specifically for us?
The CV is both a tool for building and a tool for presenting and storytelling about your personal and professional brand (yes, actually we all have one 🙂 ) It should showcase what problems you can solve and what makes you different from others who can do the same, as well as what drives you in your career.
• What is your personal brand?
• How to best present your career history so far?
• What is your professional passion and purpose?
• How should I present this information in my CV so that the above is clear?
The answers to the questions above will help you create a CV that will stand out and serve you well in achieving the goals you have set for yourself.
Last but not least, working with a professional in the process of preparing a really good CV can be an extremely useful process for self-awareness, building confidence and an objective view of yourself at this stage of your development.
