Тhe 7 Most Annoying Recruitment Mistakes

A Cheeky Career Coach’s Guide

As a career coach, a seasoned executive search professional and coach of leaders in recruitment business, I’ve seen it all in this particular world .
As I will always have a soft spot for improving recruitment experience, I thought to share some of my insights with a touch of humor and some practical advice for both candidates and recruiters.

So here are the top 7 mistakes in recruitment today that drive us crazy and make both recruiters’ and candidates’ lives miserable:

1. The Mysterious Job Description 🕵️‍♂️ Vague job descriptions that leave candidates guessing are the worst. Is it a marketing role or a secret agent position?
Tip for recruiters: Be clear and detailed. Let candidates know exactly what they’re applying for.
Tip for candidates: If the job description is vague, don’t be afraid to ask for more details before applying. It shows initiative and ensures you’re not wasting your time.

2. The Ghosting Phenomenon 👻 Candidates pour their heart and soul into applications, only to hear… nothing. Radio silence.

Tip for recruiters: Follow up! A simple “thanks, but no thanks” goes a long way.
Tip for candidates: Don’t take it personally. Follow up after interviews to show your continued interest and keep the lines of communication open.

3. Junior Recruiters vs. Senior Candidates 🍼 vs. 👴
It’s painful when a junior recruiter grills a senior candidate with basic questions. There’s a generation gap that’s hard to ignore.
Tip for recruiters: Match experience levels in interviews. It’s about respect and relevance.
Tip for candidates: Be patient and professional. Use the opportunity to highlight your experience and guide the conversation towards your strengths.

4. The Endless Interview Cycle 🔄 Why does the interview process sometimes feel like a marathon? Five rounds, six rounds… will it ever end?

Tip for recruiters: Streamline your process. If you need more than three interviews, rethink your strategy.
Tip for candidates: Clarify the interview process early on. It’s okay to ask how many rounds to expect and the timeline for decisions.

5. The One-Sided Conversation 🗣️
Recruiters who talk at candidates instead of with them. It’s not an interrogation, folks!
Tip for recruiters: Engage in a dialogue. Listen as much as you speak.
Tip for candidates: Prepare questions and engage actively. Show that you’re interested in the role and the company.

6. Unrealistic Expectations 🚀 Looking for a candidate with 20 years of experience, a PhD, and willing to work for peanuts? Dream on.
Tip for recruiters: Be realistic about your requirements and compensation. Good talent deserves good pay.
Tip for candidates: Know your worth. Don’t settle for less than you deserve and be ready to negotiate.

7. Poor Communication Skills 🗨️ Typos in emails, unclear instructions, and missed messages. Come on, we can do better.
Tip for recruiters: Double-check your communication. Clear, professional interactions build trust.
Tip for candidates: Be meticulous with your application and follow-up communications. Attention to detail sets you apart.
